Maritime History, Archaeology, Coastal Science
Overview
My personal interests involve historical descriptive studies (e.g., archaeological site, vessel type, and shipwreck histories, and resource inventories), landscape analysis (e.g., risk-taking behavior patterns, industrial landscapes, battlescapes), technological change (e.g., industrial resource extraction, infrastructure development, wooden ship construction), and testing digital methodologies to present or visualize maritime heritage information. While I am interested in all aspects of the maritime past, my focus has shifted more towards the maritime history and archaeology of the 18th and 19th centuries. Key themes in past and current research include:

-
Colonial maritime history (North America, Caribbean)
-
Harbors, ports, landing sites, waterfronts, maritime entrepôts
-
Maritime infrastructure (locks & dams, lighthouses, etc.)
-
Ships and ship construction; 17th-19th century
-
Resource extraction (naval stores, whaling)
-
Landscapes (maritime cultural landscape, industrial landscape, risk-taking behaviors)
-
Battlescapes (technology, strategy, tactics, reconstruction); 18th century
-
Digital documentation (site modeling, geospatial visualization & analysis)
